Bonnie lass and ol’ Don

The relationship between 79-year-old retired dairy farmer Don Dempster and his three-year-old border collie Bonnie is best described as ‘steady and devoted’. On a normal day the two old souls can be found pottering about the work shed or easing their way down the laneways on their Zeerust property.

Where did you get Bonnie from?

She’s a pure-bred border collie from a Bendigo breeder. That’s why we called her Bonnie — Bonnie from Bendigo.

Why did you get her?

As a pet. I didn’t want her working. We’d had dogs before who worked or were pets but she was definitely for company.

Does she still do some herding?

I can get her to do a bit of herding, but none of the get back stuff. When we had…
